How do you maintain a positive outlook on life? Is it possible, and if so, is there any evidence to back it up? To help you, I’ve compiled a list of ten scientifically proven methods.

Work out a little more

A lot of research has been done on this topic. Exercising releases endorphins that improve your mood, whether you’re working out or just taking a stroll to the grocery store. After a good workout, I’ve never met anyone who was down in the dumps. Researchers came to the conclusion that regular physical activity can help prevent depression.

Three groups of depressed people are put on anti-depressants, exercise, or a combination of the two in the best study I’ve come across. Yes, all three groups were happier, but how long was it lasting? The relapse rate for the group that had only been treated with exercise was only 9% six months later. How had the two other groups relapsed? They had rates ranging from 38 percent to 31 percent, which meant that about a third of them were now depressed.

Think positively

Your happiness depends on your thoughts – positive or negative. Because you’re constantly aiming for better grades, higher salaries, and other forms of success, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever achieve true happiness. As much as 30 percent of the increase in energy, creativity, and productivity can be attributed to positive thinking. Now, rather than when you’re rich and famous, the secret is to use positive thinking.

Get rid of bad feelings

Some people have a hard time getting rid of their negative thoughts because they are so engulfed in them. According to research conducted at the University of Madrid, it was effective to jot down these thoughts on paper and then shred them. If you don’t want them, you should shred, trash, or burn them.

Toxic effects can be reduced by physically disposing of them. Psychologists recommend that you do this on a regular basis to maintain your mental well-being.

Cherish good memories

Cherish good memories than material possessions. It can be demoralising and ruin the initial joy of purchasing and taking possession of a new car, TV, or computer to compare one’s possessions and look at better items. It was the hippocampus, which processes our positive thoughts, that researchers focused their attention on. The more we don’t get enough sleep, the more this function begins to squeak and negative thoughts begin to proliferate. People are always in a bad mood when they don’t get enough sleep.

Help others

People may experience a brief burst of happiness when they purchase larger homes, cars, and cell phones, but these purchases do not appear to have a lasting impact on their overall well-being. That’s just a blip on the radar. Researchers have discovered that helping others increases our own well-being by devoting a small amount of our time or money.

Create a goal

As a group, we often fantasise about winning the lottery and discussing where we’d go and what we’d buy. We might even bring up the subject of charitable contributions. But we hardly ever broach the subject of how much better off we’d be if we didn’t have to worry about anything. This is why setting priorities is so critical if you want to achieve the kind of life you’ve always dreamed of.

These are important questions, but people who focus on their strengths instead of their flaws tend to be happier in general. One of the best ways to be happy and make the world a better place is to use our strengths to their full potential.
