He has received the Padma Shri from the Indian government as well as the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the Legion of Honor from the French government. Khan’s popularity extends well beyond India and into Asia. He is widely considered one of the most financially and critically successful actors of all time.

Shah Rukh Khan got his start in the industry in the late ’80s, when he made guest spots on a number of different TV shows. With the film Deewana from 1992, he entered the Bollywood scene. Khan first gained attention for playing bad guys in the movies Baazigar (1993), Darr (1993), and Anjaam (1993).  He shot to fame after playing in a string of romantic comedies including Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Mohabbatein (2000), and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001). NASA scientist in Swades (2004), a hockey coach in Chak De! India (2007), and a man with Asperger syndrome in My Name Is Khan (2009) all garnered Khan plaudits from critics. The comedies Chennai Express (2013), Happy New Year (2014), and Dilwale (2015), and the crime picture Raees (2015), are among his most successful works. Many of his films address issues of gender, race, class, and religion, as well as Indian national identity and relationships to diaspora populations.

In addition to his roles as co-chairman of Red Chillies Entertainment and its subsidiaries and co-owner of the Indian Premier League’s Kolkata Knight Riders and the Caribbean Premier League’s Trinbago Knight Riders, Shah Rukh Khan is also an active businessman in the sports and entertainment industries. Presenting on TV and performing live shows are both regular occurrences for him.

Due to his numerous endorsement deals and business endeavours, Shah Rukh Khan is commonly referred to as “Brand SRK” in the media. Khan has been honoured with the Pyramide con Marni award from UNESCO in 2011 for his dedication to the education of children and the Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum in 2018 for his role as a leader in advancing the rights of children and women in India. He is consistently ranked as one of India’s cultural heavy hitters, and in 2008, Newsweek included him in their list of the world’s fifty most influential individuals.

The media frequently refer to Khan as “King Khan,” “The Baadshah of Bollywood,” and “The King of Bollywood” because of his status as one of the most famous actors in the world. He was named one of Newsweek’s 50 most influential people in the world in 2008. His rise to prominence in the 1990s, amid India’s period of economic liberalisation, is often cited as the reason for his widespread appeal. In the United Kingdom, he has starred in seven of the top 10 highest-grossing Hindi films from 1989 to 2003.

Some of Shah Rukh Khan’s fans border on the fanatical in their devotion to him. In India, posters of him were sold on the streets alongside those of religious figures, and shrines were built in his honour. In hopes of catching a glimpse of him, devoted followers have altered their names to mimic his, mailed him messages scrawled in blood, and camped out in front of his house.  Khan was stopped in August 2009 after a passenger with a name identical to his “popped up on the computer” at Newark International Airport in New Jersey. Some of the officers and other inmates in the interrogation room recognised him and requested for signatures.

FICCI named Shah Rukh Khan one of the decade’s “Most Powerful Entertainers” for his efforts in the 2000s. In 2012 and 2013, Khan topped Forbes India’s “Celebrity 100 list,” a ranking of the highest-paid and most-famous Indian celebrities. Khan is the proud owner of multiple properties in India and elsewhere. His Mumbai home, known as Mannat, is a popular tourist attraction and a protected landmark because of its historical significance to the city’s architecture. Khan has several properties including a home in New Delhi, a £20 million apartment in London, and a 178 million (US$2.2 million) property on the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai.

According to Wealth-X, Khan has a net worth of $600 million, making him the second-wealthiest actor in the world after only Jerry Seinfeld. Khan topped Box Office India’s list of top actors for the first time in 1994, and he stayed there until 2008. He also topped the list in 1995 and 1998.

On November 2, 1965, Shah Rukh Khan was born to a Muslim household in New Delhi. His grandpa, Iftikhar Ahmed, spent the first five years of his life in Mangalore, where he worked as the port’s chief engineer in the 1960s. Mir Taj Mohammed Khan, Khan’s father was an Indian independence leader from Peshawar who worked with Abdul Ghaffar Khan and the nonviolent resistance movement Khudai Khidmatgar to promote a unified and independent India. Mir was an Indian National Congress supporter and a devotee of Abdul Ghaffar Khan. He was also related to the Indian National Army’s Major General Shah Nawaz Khan. Khan’s father’s ancestors continued to reside in the Qissa Khwani Bazaar neighbourhood of Peshawar’s Shah Wali Qataal in 2010. The partition of India in 1948 prompted Mir to relocate to New Delhi. Lateef Fatima, Khan’s mom, was the offspring of a high-ranking government engineer. In 1959, he and his mother tied the knot.

According to Khan’s Twitter bio, he is “half Hyderabadi (mother), half Pathan (father), and partly Kashmiri (grandmother). Khan claims that his Afghan paternal ancestor, named Mir Jan Muhammad Khan, was of Pashtun (Pathan) descent. His cousins on his father’s side in Peshawar eventually set the record straight, revealing that the family speaks Hindko and originally hails from Kashmir before making the long journey south to reside in Peshawar several generations ago.

Shah Rukh Khan’s childhood home was in the New Delhi neighbourhood of Rajendra Nagar. His family was middle class; they rented an apartment and his father operated various businesses, including a restaurant. Khan went to St. Columba’s School, a prestigious institution in central Delhi, where he achieved not just academic success but also athletic greatness, earning the school’s highest honour, the Sword of Honour, for his efforts in both fields. Khan had

originally planned on becoming a professional athlete, but a childhood shoulder injury ended those hopes. Instead, he spent his youth impersonating Bollywood stars like Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, and Mumtaz on stage and earning rave reviews for his performances. Amrita Singh, a successful Bollywood actress, was an early friend and frequent co-star.

While pursuing his bachelor’s degree in economics at Hansraj College (1985–1988), Shah Rukh Khan spent the most of his time studying acting with Barry John, the artistic director of Delhi’s Theatre Action Group (TAG). He started a master’s programme in mass communication at Jamia Millia Islamia after Hansraj, but dropped out to focus on his acting career. During the beginning of his career in Bollywood, he also enrolled at the National School of Drama in Delhi. Both of his parents passed away at a young age; his dad in 1981 from cancer and mom in 1991 from diabetes-related problems. After their parents’ passing, Khan’s older sister Shahnaz Lalarukh (born in 1960) fell into a deep depression and he took on the role of caregiver.

On October 25, 1991, after a six-year romance, Shah Rukh Khan wed Gauri Chibber, a Punjabi Hindu, in a traditional Hindu ceremony. Aryan (born in 1997) and Suhana (born in 1999) are their children. AbRam, their third child, was delivered to them via surrogacy in 2013. Khan’s two eldest children are Aryan, who attended the USC School of Cinematic Arts in California and aspires to become a writer-director, and Suhana, who worked as an assistant director on Khan’s Zero (2018) and is now attending New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts to study drama and acting. In the short film “The Grey Part of Blue,” released in November 2019, Suhana made her acting debut. Khan claims that he has a firm faith in Islam but also respects his wife’s faith. His household features both Hindu and Islamic symbols, including a Quran, as his children practise both faiths.

Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri love story

Shah Rukh Khan met his future wife, Gauri Khan, when he was 18 years old. Gauri was only 14 at the time. They met at a party when they were both teenagers. It’s common knowledge that years later, Shah Rukh Khan called Gauri while posing as a female acquaintance. This youthful relationship quickly became overly sentimental.

Some say Gauri Khan was never a fan of SRK’s movie career. After an argument, Gauri once showed up in Mumbai without telling Shah Rukh Khan. As the man pursued his woman, he and his sweetheart were said to have reconciled on a Mumbai beach. On October 25, 1991, the happy couple tied the knot. Reports state that Shah Rukh Khan wore a suit taken from the “Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman” set.

Public image of Shahrukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan was given the name Shahrukh Khan at birth, but he prefers to be referred simply as Shah Rukh Khan or just SRK. He is admired for the total immersion he brings to each job, for which he is known.  Khan is a natural performer with “a rawness in him,” says director Aziz Mirza, and “a mass appeal, even when he was only with friends.”  In spite of the praise, Khan has been called out for his over acting.

Shah Rukh Khan remains one of India’s most revered movie actors, having received numerous awards from the press.  After being caught on camera smoking during a match between KKR and the Rajasthan Royals in April 2012, Khan was issued a notice by the Rajasthan Police for smoking in public.

In a 2007 poll by Eastern Eye, Shah Rukh Khan was voted the sexiest Asian man; in subsequent polls by the same publication in 2008 and 2011, he placed third. The Times of India’s annual list of the 50 sexiest men in India always include him in the top ten.

Shah Rukh Khan’s dimples, according to the media, are one of his most recognisable traits. In addition to his fame as an actor, Khan is also regarded as a fashion icon.  As early as 2011, he was named one of the world’s best-dressed men by the British edition of GQ. Khan was named one of Bollywood’s 11 best dressed guys by the Indian issue of GQ the following year. He walked the runway at both Lakme Fashion Week and India Couture Fashion Week in 2009.

A prestigious degree was awarded to Shah Rukh Khan in 2015 from Edinburgh University in Scotland. The Princess Royal, who serves as University Chancellor at the University of Edinburgh, awarded him the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa.

TV and Movie debut of Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan in his debut TV series Fauji

Due to production delays, Shah Rukh Khan didn’t make his television debut until the Raj Kumar Kapoor–directed series Fauji in 1989, rather than in his intended position as the lead in Lekh Tandon’s 1988 TV series Dil Dariya. He starred as lead character Abhimanyu Rai in the series, which offered a realistic portrayal of army cadet training. This led to further roles in Mani Kaul’s Idiot (1989–90) and Aziz Mirza’s Circus (1989–90) on television. Khan also appeared in the English-language television film In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones and the Indian television series Umeed (1989) in supporting roles. Critics began drawing comparisons between his appearances in these serials and those of film actor Dilip Kumar, despite the fact that Khan had no interest in film acting at the time since he believed he was not good enough.

In April of 1991, Khan reversed his decision to stop acting, saying that the industry provided him with a “escape” from the loss of his mother. In order to pursue a career in Bollywood full-time, he relocated from Delhi to Mumbai, where he was promptly signed to four films.

His first job offer came in May, and by June he had begun filming Dil Aashna Hai, Hema Malini’s directorial debut.

Deewana, which came out in June of 1992, was Shah Rukh Khan’s first movie. As the film’s second male protagonist, he co-starred with Divya Bharti and was played by Rishi Kapoor. Khan’s Bollywood career began with the success of Deewana, for which he received the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award. As the male protagonist, Khan debuted with the 1992 flicks Chamatkar, Dil Aashna Hai, and the comedy Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, the first of many films he made with Juhi Chawla. The first few movie roles he had had him playing people with boundless vitality and optimism.

In 1993, Shah Rukh Khan’s films Baazigar and Darr were both commercial successes thanks in large part to his portrayal of malevolent characters. In Baazigar, Khan played a murky avenger who murders his girlfriend, a deviation from the typical Bollywood formula that surprised Indian audiences. Khan’s first Filmfare Award for Best Actor came for his performance in Baazigar, the first of many collaborations with actress Kajol.

Darr was Shah Rukh Khan’s debut film with director Yash Chopra and his production company, Yash Raj Films. Audiences found amusement in Khan’s stammering and the repeated repetition of “I love you, K-k-k-Kiran.” It was asserted by Malini Mannath of The Indian Express that he “walks away with the acting awards in yet another dismal portrayal”. He was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role (also known as the Best Villain Award) for his work in Darr, but ultimately lost out to Paresh Rawal for his performance in Sir. Parts of Maya Memsaab were deleted by the Central Board of Film Certification due to a nude sequence starring Khan and Deepa Sahi; the film was released the same year, 1993.

Later in life, Shah Rukh Khan stated that his favourite performance was as a love-struck guitarist in the 1994 comedy-drama film Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, directed by Kundan Shah and starring himself, Deepak Tijori, Suchitra Krishnamurthy, and others. He went on to win the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance for his work. Khan, who co-starred with Madhuri Dixit in the 1994 film Anjaam, earned the Filmfare Best Villain Award for his performance as an obsessed lover. It was once thought that a leading man’s career may be jeopardised if he took on adversarial roles in commercial Hindi films.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

The movie that made Shah Rukh Khan a big star was Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge released on October 20th, 1995. The movie enjoyed huge popularity on its release. Young non-resident Indians Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran (Kajol) fall in love while travelling with friends throughout Europe. As much as Raj would like to marry Simran, her father has already offered her hand in marriage to a friend’s son. The film was shot between September 1994 and August 1995 in India, London, and Switzerland.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, one of the most popular Indian films ever, raked in an estimated 2 billion ($60 million) worldwide in ticket sales alone. With 10 wins at the Filmfare Awards, including Best Film and Best Actor, it set a record at the time, and it also took home the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Offering Wholesome Entertainment. One of the most widely distributed albums of the decade was composed of music from the film.

The film was acclaimed by critics for its ability to appeal to a wide audience with its messages of family values and individuality. Since then, more movies have started appealing to the non-Indian diaspora because of its financial success. Many films have tried to replicate its success by borrowing elements of its plot, visual style, or iconic scenes. The British Film Institute ranked Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as the twelfth-best Indian film of all time, and it was one of only three Hindi films included in the reference book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. When it comes to Indian movies, this one has been playing the longest. More than 25 years after its initial premiere, the Maratha Mandir theatre in Mumbai is still showing it in 2021.

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are commonly cited as one of Indian cinema’s most beloved on-screen couples because of the chemistry they exhibited on screen in multiple hit films together, such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001), My Name Is Khan (2010), and Dilwale (2015). In 2016, Sogosurvey ran an online poll in which over 47% of respondents chose Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as Bollywood’s greatest timeless love story.

The BFI wanted to have a book written about Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, so they commissioned one. For the British Film Institute’s (BFI) Modern Classics series, it was the first Hindi film to be featured. This book came out in 2002 and was written by Anupama Chopra. In 2004, Harper-Collins published a paperback version of the book titled Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge: The Making of a Blockbuster. Unfortunately, Yash Raj Films waited until 2002 to release the picture on DVD. Documentaries such as The Making and 300 Weeks Celebration, as well as Success Story, footage from the 41st Filmfare Awards, and interviews with the cast and crew, were included in the disc.

The cast and crew were honoured at a special dinner in 2006 to mark the film’s 500th week in theatres. This event was co-hosted by the Swiss Consulate General in Mumbai and Switzerland Tourism. In 2010, Yash Raj Films and Indian and Swiss travel agencies came to an arrangement to offer a trip package named “YRF Enchanted Journey” that would take tourists to Switzerland to see the places where some of the company’s most well-known films were shot, including Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

In January 2015, in response to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s quoting of “May the force be with you” from the American film franchise Star Wars, U.S. President Barack Obama decided to quote a line from a Hindi film. He picked a sentence from the movie and added, “you know what I mean”: “Senorita, bade bade deshon mein…” (Miss, in huge countries…). While visited India in February 2020, US President Donald Trump referred to DDLJ as a “Classic Indian Films.”

Romantic roles in late 1990s

In 1995, Shah Rukh Khan appeared in seven films, beginning with the operatic thriller Karan Arjun, directed by Rakesh Roshan.

All four of Khan’s 1996 projects bombed at the box office and with critics, but the following year his performance with Aditya Pancholi and Juhi Chawla in the romantic comedy Yes Boss gained him acclaim and a Filmfare Best Actor nomination.

Later in 1997, Shah Rukh Khan played Arjun, a musician with an ethical conundrum, in Subhash Ghai’s social drama Pardes, which had a diasporic theme. According to India Today, it was one of the earliest highly successful Bollywood films in the United States. Dil To Pagal Hai, a musical romance, was Khan’s last film release of 1997. It was their second time working together with Yash Chopra. He played Rahul, the jilted lover of Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor in a love triangle. The film and Khan’s performance were critically acclaimed, and he was awarded Best Actor at Filmfare for the third time.

Shah Rukh Khan starred in three films as the main actor and had one guest appearance in 1998. His first film of the year was Mahesh Bhatt’s Duplicate, an action comedy that featured him in a dual role opposite Juhi Chawla and Sonali Bendre. This was the first of several projects he worked on with Yash Johar’s Dharma Productions. Although the film was poorly received, Khan was praised for his enthusiastic performance. The following year, in Dil Se.., the final instalment of Mani Ratnam’s trilogy of terror films, Khan garnered critical acclaim for his performance as an All India Radio correspondent who falls in love with a mysterious terrorist (Manisha Koirala).

His year ended with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, a romantic comedy directed by Karan Johar in which he starred as a college student caught in a love triangle with Kajol and Rani Mukerji. Khan received the Best Actor award at the Filmfare Awards for the second year in a row, despite the fact that he and some critics felt that Kajol’s performance was more noteworthy.

Shah Rukh Khan’s subsequent appearances in a string of romantic comedies and family dramas cemented his status as an icon of romance in India. He maintained close working relationships with the people who shaped his image and turned him become a superstar: Yash Chopra, Aditya Chopra, and Karan Johar. Despite Yash Chopra’s persistent prodding, Khan did not kiss any of his co-stars till 2012. This did not stop him from becoming a romantic leading man.

Baadshah, in which Shah Rukh Khan featured alongside Twinkle Khanna, was his only 1999 film release. He was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role, but lost to Govinda for Haseena Maan Jaayegi, even though the film flopped at the box office.

Shah Rukh Khan in Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani

In 1999, Shah Rukh Khan teamed up with actress Juhi Chawla and filmmaker Aziz Mirza to form a production business called Dreamz Unlimited. Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000), starring Khan and Chawla, was the company’s first film, and it bombed at the box office. Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, starring Hrithik Roshan, a relative newbie at the time, was released a week prior, and many critics felt that Roshan stole the show from Khan.

Shah Rukh Khan appeared in Hey Ram (2000), a film by Kamal Haasan that was shot in both Tamil and Hindi and in which he played a supporting role. The part of Dr. Amjad Khan, an archaeologist, marked his first acting role in Tamil. Since he hoped to collaborate with Haasan, he gave his performance away for free. Khan starred as the eponymous character in Santosh Sivan’s historical epic Aoka (2001), a partially fictionalised depiction of the life of Emperor Ashoka, as part of Dreamz Unlimited’s effort at a comeback. Although the film was well-received at festivals like Venice and Toronto in 2001, it bombed at the Indian box office.

Shah Rukh Khan was forced to shut down srkworld.com, a company he had co-founded with Dreamz Unlimited, as production losses mounted. Khan fractured her vertebrae in an action scene for her cameo in Krishna Vamsi’s Shakti: The Power, released in December 2001. After discovering he had a prolapsed disc, he explored a number of complementary and alternative medicine options. Although he tried a number of different treatments for the injuries that kept him in excruciating pain while filming several of his films, none of them were successful. By the start of 2003, his condition had deteriorated to the point where he needed surgery at Wellington Hospital in London to remove a disc from the front of his neck and fuse the bones in that area together. As of June 2003, Khan was back on set, albeit he had cut back on his workload and annual film assignments.

Shah Rukh Khan with Kajol in film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

Shah Rukh Khan credits the success of films like Aditya Chopra’s Mohabbatein (2000) and Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001) as a turning point in his career at this time. Both films featured Amitabh Bachchan in a dictatorial role, and they depicted the protagonists’ clashes with each other ideologically.

The public adored Khan’s portrayals in these films, and Mohabbatein earned him his second Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. For the following five years, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… remained the highest-grossing Indian production ever in international markets.

In Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period romance Devdas from 2002, Shah Rukh Khan played the titular role of a defiant alcoholic opposite Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit. It was the most costly Bollywood film ever made at around 500 million (US$10.29 million) and was a financial success, grossing around 1.68 billion ($35 million) globally. The film won a slew of awards, including 10 Filmfare Awards (including Best Actor for Khan) and the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language.

The comedy-drama Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), in which Shah Rukh Khan appeared, was written and set in New York City. It was the highest-grossing Bollywood film in international markets and the second-highest-grossing film in India. Khan, who co-starred with Jaya Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, and Preity Zinta, won acclaim for his performance as the terminally ill Aman Mathur, and was praised for his ability to make viewers feel for him. Khan and the other partners of Dreamz Unlimited had a falling out after they were unable to cast Juhi Chawla in their 2003 adaptation of Aziz Mirza’s Chalte Chalte, leading to the dissolution of the company.

Shah Rukh Khan enjoyed both critical and commercial success in 2004. By bringing in his wife Gauri as a producer, he rebranded Dreamz Unlimited as Red Chillies Entertainment. He had a starring role in the first film the company made, the masala film Main Hoon Na, directed by Farah Khan.

Shah Rukh Khan subsequently starred in Yash Chopra’s romantic drama Veer-Zaara, which premiered at the 55th Berlin International Film Festival to acclaim. Khan played an Indian Air Force fighter who falls in love with a Pakistani woman (Preity Zinta).  With a worldwide gross of nearly 940 million (US$20.74 million), it was 2004’s highest-grossing Indian film, with Main Hoon Na coming in as a distant second with a gross of 680 million (US$15.01 million).

Ashutosh Gowariker’s social drama Swades stars Shah Rukh Khan as a NASA scientist who patriotically returns to India to rediscover his origins. It was the first Indian picture to be shot within the NASA research centre at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Shah Rukh Khan’s breakout role came in 2005’s Paheli, a fantasy drama directed by Amol Palekar. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), a musical romantic drama, marked his third time working with Karan Johar. The film told the narrative of two unhappy New York City marriages that deteriorated into extramarital affairs. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, and Kirron Kher, the film grossed over 1.13 billion (US$25.62 million) internationally, making it India’s highest-grossing film abroad. Khan received Best Actor nods for his work in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and the action thriller Don, a remake of the 1978 film of the same name, despite criticisms of his portrayal of the eponymous character in Don when compared to Amitabh Bachchan’s.

In the 2007 Yash Raj Films film Chak De! India, Shah Rukh Khan played a disgraced hockey player who leads the Indian women’s national hockey team to World Cup victory. The film was a commercial success in India and abroad. Filmfare magazine’s 2010 issue, titled “Top 80 Iconic Performances,” highlighted his work. Same year, Khan acted in Farah Khan’s reincarnation melodrama Om Shanti Om, playing a junior performer from the 1970s who is reborn as a 2000s era superstar opposite Arjun Rampal, Deepika Padukone, and Shreyas Talpade. This movie earned the most money of any Indian film in 2007 at the box office. Khan received his second Best Actor nomination at Filmfare for his work in Om Shanti Om.

Shah Rukh Khan in film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

The love drama Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) had Shah Rukh Khan working with Aditya Chopra for the third time, this time opposite the then-unknown Anushka Sharma. He portrayed the introverted Surinder Sahni, who develops an outgoing persona, Raj, out of his love for his young arranged wife, Sharma. While filming a minor role in Mudassar Aziz’s Dulha Mil Gaya in December 2008, Khan injured his shoulder. However, the discomfort rendered him practically immobile, and in February 2009, he underwent arthroscopic surgery. With the help of actors Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, and Deepika Padukone, he made a cameo appearance as Bollywood icon Sahir Khan in the 2009 film Billu. Khan, as head of the film’s production firm Red Chillies, decided to change the title from Billu Barber to Billu after receiving backlash from barbers across the country. Already up and running billboards with the original headline were modified to conceal the offensive word.

Shah Rukh Khan began filming My Name Is Khan (2010), his fourth collaboration with filmmaker Karan Johar and his sixth with Kajol, shortly after turning down the role that ultimately went to Anil Kapoor in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire (2008). The film is inspired by real events and takes place against the backdrop of how Muslims have been seen since the attacks on September 11. Khan portrays Rizwan Khan, a Muslim with moderate Asperger syndrome who travels across America to visit the president. Khan won his eighth Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his performance in My Name is Khan, tying him with actor Dilip Kumar for the most victories in the category. The film was also one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films ever outside of India.

Shah Rukh Khan made his debut in the superhero genre in 2011 with Arjun Rampal and Kareena Kapoor in Anubhav Sinha’s Ra.One. The film centres on a London-based videogame creator who lets one of his wicked creations loose in the real world. The film’s reported budget of 1.25 billion (US$26.78 million) made it the most costly in Bollywood history. With a worldwide total of 2.4 billion (US$51.42 million), Ra.One was a financial success despite poor media coverage of its box office performance. Although Khan’s performance as the robotic superhero G.One was universally praised, his portrayal as the videogame designer Shekhar was roundly panned by critics.

Shah Rukh Khan’s 2011 output continued with Don 2, the sequel to his previous effort, Don (2006). As part of his preparation for Khan’s role, the actor engaged in rigorous physical training and did many of his own stunts. It premiered at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival and was the year’s highest-grossing Bollywood production outside of India.

In 2012, Shah Rukh Khan only appeared in Jab Tak Hai Jaan, a love drama starring Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, which was director Yash Chopra’s final film. Earning about 2.11 billion (US$39.49 million) worldwide, Jab Tak Hai Jaan was a moderate financial success. Along with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…, Veer-Zaara, and Don 2, this film premiered at the 2012 Marrakech International Film Festival in Morocco. Khan, Kaif, Sharma, and a number of Chopra’s other leading ladies also performed a tribute to the late director at the subsequent Zee Cine Awards.

In 2013, Shah Rukh Khan starred for Red Chillies Entertainment in the action comedy Chennai Express, directed by Rohit Shetty, which received mixed reviews and some criticism for its perceived disparagement of South Indian culture, despite the fact that it included a tribute to the late Tamil actor and superstar Rajinikanth. Even with the negative reviews, the film was a huge financial success, generating about 4 billion (US$68.26 million) worldwide and becoming the highest grossing Bollywood film of all time, briefly overtaking 3 Idiots.

The Times of India stated that Shah Rukh Khan has sought a new arrangement where the names of his lead female co-stars would appear before his own in the credits on 7 March 2013, the day before International Women’s Day. He gave credit for his achievements to the women in his life, notably his co-stars. He played alongside Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, and Boman Irani in Farah Khan’s 2014 action comedy Happy New Year, marking his third time working with the filmmaker. Despite complaints about the two-dimensionality of Khan’s character, the film was a commercial success, bringing in 3.8 billion (US$64.85 million) around the world.

Next, Shah Rukh Khan was seen in Rohit Shetty’s action comedy Dilwale starring Kajol, Varun Dhawan, and Kriti Sanon. In spite of negative reviews, the picture was a commercial success, grossing 3.7 billion yen (US$57.68 million). Then, in the action film Fan by Maneesh Sharma, he played both a superstar and a fan who looks exactly like him. The film’s lacklustre performance in theatres was widely blamed by critics on its refusal to follow industry standards. Later same year, Khan appeared in Gauri Shinde’s coming-of-age drama Dear Zindagi as a therapist to an aspiring cinematographer.

A bootlegger turned mafia in 1980s Gujarat, Shah Rukh Khan played the title role in Rahul Dholakia’s action crime drama Raees (2017). It made roughly 3.08 billion (US$47.3 million) at the box office. In Jab Harry Met Sejal, directed by Imtiaz Ali, Khan played a tour guide who falls in love with a traveller (Anushka Sharma). There wasn’t much success at the box office for this movie.

Shah Rukh Khan then appeared with Sharma and Katrina Kaif in Zero (2018), a romantic drama directed by Aanand L. Rai. In this film, Khan played Bauua Singh, a dwarf who is caught in a love triangle. Khan’s performance, however, was praised by critics and helped the picture to earn mostly positive reviews. It was a commercial bust. The poor performance of Khan’s flicks at the box office reportedly had an effect on his stardom.

Because of the COVID-19 outbreak in India, Khan had to delay his return to full-time acting after the release of Zero.

After an extended hiatus from film, 2023 will see Shah Rukh Khan return in three films, including Pathaan, a Yash Raj Films production directed by Siddharth Anand and costarring Deepika Padukone and John Abraham. The movie will debut in theatres next month. And in June, he’ll be seen in Atlee’s Jawan, and in December, he and Taapsee Pannu will be featured in Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki.

Ownership of IPL team

Shah Rukh Khan, along with Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta, paid $75.09 million in 2008 to purchase the Kolkata franchise in the Twenty20 cricket event Indian Premier League (IPL), which they promptly renamed the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).  In 2009, KKR had a brand worth of $42.1 million, making it one of the most valuable IPL teams.  On the field, the squad struggled over its first three seasons. They gradually got better until they finally won it all in 2012 and again in 2014. The Knight Riders’ current winning streak is the longest of any Twenty20 Indian squad.

At the 2011 IPL season’s opening ceremony, Khan danced to Tamil music alongside Sunidhi Chauhan and Shriya Saran. In 2013, he returned for another appearance with Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, and Pitbull.

After an altercation with security following a KKR-Mumbai Indians match in May 2012, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) banned Shah Rukh Khan from the Wankhede Stadium for five years. Although Khan claimed that he intervened when he saw youngsters, including his own daughter, being “manhandled” by security personnel, he later changed his story. He had also been subjected to community lewd comment, and said the officers were particularly high-handed and confrontational in their behaviour.

Shah Rukh Khan stated that his actions were in support of their action and for cheap publicity after MCA officials accused him of being drunk, punching a guard, and verbally insulting a female supporter of the Mumbai Indians after the match. Later, a Wankhede security guard denied to MCA authorities that Shah Rukh Khan had hit him, refuting their first assertion that he did. After Khan’s team won the championship match, he issued an apology to his supporters. In 2015, the MCA lifted the ban, and in 2016, the Mumbai Police Department reported that they had concluded that Shah Rukh Khan had neither been intoxicated or used obscene language in front of kids at the Wankhede Stadium in 2012.
